A large shrub or small tree to 5m, with weeping habit. Profuse flowering in spring with a follow up in autumn. Rich scarlet red. Very popular with birds, particularly wattle birds and rosellas. Creates a dense groundcover spreading to 1.5m. Foliage has narrow leaves densely packed onto stems and covered in hairs that give it a soft woolly appearance. Spidery pink flowers cover the bush in spring. It prefers cooler areas and is very frost tolerant. Shelter from noonday sun in heatwaves and ensure free-draining soil. Dislikes warm humidity.

Melicope rubra (formerly Evodiella muelleri) is generally a small, grey-barked large shrub or small tree to about 6 metres with glossy green, trifoliate leaves up to 75 mm long.  Clusters of bright pink flowers occur along the branches during summer and these are followed by green, citrus-like fruits which grow to about 30-40mm in length and breadth. Birds such as lorikeets and honeyeaters are said to be attracted to this plant. In addition it is one of the food trees for the Ulysses butterfly. It does suffer greatly from frost, especially in exposed sites, Plant in sheltered location or keep in containers and move to glasshouse in frosty weather.

Ok, they made it through our Winter, snow and all, in the unheated glasshouse!
